If you already ride and you’re planning a trip to Portugal, you have two options for gear: bring your own (airline fees, the hassle, the risk of damage in transit) or rent at the spot.
If you’re considering renting at Lagoa de Óbidos, here’s exactly how it works at Passaro: what we rent, what it costs, who can rent, and the local things nobody tells you before you arrive.
What we rent
Our rental fleet is North, and it’s recent. You’ll ride the current North Pro kites and boards, not gear that has been through five seasons of lessons.
A kitesurf rental includes a full kitesurf set and a safety set: kite, bar and lines, board, harness, helmet and impact vest, plus a wetsuit if you need one. Kites come in a range of sizes to cover the lagoon’s typical wind, from light thermal afternoons to strong Nortada days.
Wing foil rental is available as well, with North foils, boards and wings, for riders who are already autonomous on the foil. See the wing foil page for that.
Rental prices
At the time of writing, kitesurf rental (full set plus safety set, one person) is:
- Half day (2.5 hours): €85
- Full day: €100
- 3 days, unlimited: €270
- 5 days, unlimited: €450
Current prices and online booking are on the lessons and rentals page. Multi-day rentals are unlimited, so on a good week the five-day option is the one most visiting riders take.
Who can rent
We rent to autonomous riders. In practice, that means you can:
- Launch and land your kite safely with an assistant
- Body drag upwind to recover your board
- Ride upwind in both directions, consistently
- Self-rescue and relaunch in the water
- Handle a gusty or stronger-than-forecast session without panic
You don’t need to do all of it perfectly. You need to do it under control. If you’ve only kited in lessons, or you’re coming back after a few years off, book a refresher session first. It’s cheaper than a broken kite, and it’s the fastest way to get comfortable on a new spot.
Not sure where you stand? Describe your level honestly in the booking form and we’ll tell you straight whether rental or a session makes more sense.
The spot, for riders who already know how to ride
Lagoa de Óbidos is the largest lagoon on the Portuguese coast, an hour and a half north of Lisbon and thirty minutes from Peniche. There are two main areas for kitesurfing, and you need to know the difference before you rig.
The top of the lagoon
Sandy, flat, shallow, directly open to the ocean, with a steady wind. This spot is closed to kitesurfers from 15 June to 15 September, and it’s too shallow for foiling.
Inside the lagoon
Open to navigation all year and it works for the foil. Flat water with shallow areas. The wind here is stronger than at the top of the lagoon because of a venturi effect, and it’s at its best on Nortada days (north-westerly wind). Shells and seaweed on the bottom mean water shoes are a good idea.
Wetsuit: a 4/3 is the norm. Full spot details, including a GPS pin, are on our kitesurf spot page.
Waves
If you’re a wave rider, the bay from Baleal to Peniche is twenty minutes away and works in both southerly and northerly wind. Bring or rent a strapless board and ask us where it’s working that week.
How renting works, step by step
- Book ahead. In July and August the fleet is busy. Reserve online or through the booking form a few days before, especially if you want a specific kite size.
- Check in at the school. First time, you come to our base at the lagoon. We fit your harness and give you a short local briefing: where to launch, where to ride, what to avoid.
- Rig and go. Once you’re set up, the lagoon is yours. We’re on the spot during the day if you need anything.
- Bring it back. At the end of the session or the day, gear comes back to us. No carrying wet kites to your hotel.
When to come
The best period for kitesurfing at the lagoon is April to November. Late spring has lower demand and the thermal wind starting up. Summer is peak season. September and October are quieter, often with excellent conditions, and a good time for a returning-rider trip.
Booking and conditions
Book on the lessons and rentals page or through the booking form. Cancellation terms and what happens on a no-wind day are in our booking conditions.
Not quite autonomous yet, or riding with someone who isn’t? A couple of refresher sessions before you rent, or a duo lesson with your travel partner, is the honest route. And if you’d like to try the North gear before buying, we sell new and second-hand kites at the end of each season: see the shop.
