Whether you are a complete novice or already have experience in other water sports, wingfoiling is accessible to all levels.
Here is our 5-step guide to help you get your first wingfoil equipment and make the right choice. At the end of the article, you’ll find our tips for beginners. How to choose the right equipment for beginner wingfoiling? The answer ⤵️
Table of contents
1. The wing
The “wing” is the sail you hold with both hands to catch the wind and propel yourself across the water. It is the central element of wingfoiling.
Wings come in various sizes, usually measured in square meters (m²). For beginners, an intermediate size between 4 and 8 m² is recommended, as it offers a good balance between power and maneuverability. Opting for a 5 m² wing is ideal, as it will cover most wind conditions.
2. The board
The wingfoil board differs from windsurfing or kitesurfing boards. For beginners, it is advisable to choose a board with good volume, typically between 140 and 170 liters, to ensure better stability and buoyancy. A wider and thicker board (measured in width and thickness) generally offers more stability for novices.
You can choose between an inflatable board (less expensive to purchase) or a rigid board. A rigid board allows for easier gliding and take-off compared to an inflatable board. Additionally, a rigid board can accompany you longer in your progression compared to an inflatable one (which you might want to change quickly).
3. The foil
The foil is the most technical and crucial element of your equipment. It consists of a mast, a front wing, a rear stabilizer, and a fuselage that connects them all. The foil allows the board to lift off the water and “fly” above the surface, reducing friction and increasing speed. It is important to choose the right equipment.
– The Mast: For beginners, we recommend starting with a 75 cm mast (you can find smaller and larger masts). A 75 cm mast is a good compromise for starting and experiencing your first flights. You will find aluminum masts and carbon masts. Choose the aluminum mast for starting out. It is the most affordable solution. Carbon masts are used for performance.
– The Front Wing: The most important part of the foil that generates lift. Choose a wide and thick wing when starting out. The front wing for beginners should be between 1500 cm² and 2000 cm², ensuring good stability and quick progression in your first flights.
– The Stabilizer: Again, choose a stabilizer with a large surface area.
Don’t worry! Most of the time, when you buy your first equipment, various brands offer beginner packs with foils already adapted.
4. Accessories
In addition to the main equipment, several accessories are essential for safety.
Don’t forget to ride with a board leash, a wing leash, an impact vest, and a helmet when you’re starting out.
5. Tips for getting started
To get started in wingfoiling, it’s crucial to take a few lessons with experienced instructors. A wingfoil school, like ours, will not only offer personalized advice but also the opportunity to test different equipment to find what suits you best.
Some tips to start:
1. Choose the right conditions: Moderate wind (10-15 knots) and calm water make learning easier.
2. Learn the basics on land: Before heading to the water, get familiar with handling the wing on the beach.
3. Take your time: Progression in wingfoiling can be fast, but don’t rush. Master each step before moving on to the next.
4. Stay relaxed: The key is to stay relaxed and use your body to balance the board and the foil.
Wingfoiling is an exciting sport that offers unique sensations of glide and freedom. With the right equipment and good advice, you can quickly enjoy and progress. Don’t hesitate to contact us for more information or to book your wingfoil lessons at our school.
